Augvape BTFC RDA

Augvape is following up on their successful collaboration with Mikes Vapes and the Intake RTA, and this time teaming up with VapnFagan to produce the BTFC RDA.

The BTFC may be a strange name for an atomizer, but it is supposed to summarise the versatile options this RDA offers. The B stands for ‘bottom’ airflow, the T for ‘top’ airflow, F for ‘flavor’ and C for ‘clouds.’

If this 25mm dual airflow RDA can deliver on all of those fronts, it’s going to an extremely impressive RTA.

The BTFC RDA is currently available in black, stainless steel, grey and rainbow.

The Good

Excellent build quality, top & bottom airflow options, difficult to oversquonk, brilliant flavor in bottom airflow mode.

The Bad

No notch or locking mechanism, and top airflow becomes misaligned when the bottom airflow is closed off.

The Bottom Line

There are some collaborations between manufacturers and YouTube reviewers that come out to such a fanfare but eventually disappoint. The BTFC, in my opinion, is the polar opposite. It’s slipped under the radar when in reality its one of the best dual-coil RDAs currently on the market. They may have made a few mistakes on the airflow design, but ultimately the BTFC delivers where it matters in performance, and is backed by exceptional build quality.

Augvape BTFC RDA

The Augvape BTFC RDA is a dual top and bottom airflow RDA. It measures in at 25mm in diameter and 33mm from the base to the drip tip.

The BTFC is made primarily of stainless steel and has quite a thick main barrel and chunky build posts, which lead to it having a nice solid and slightly heavy feel.

At the top of the RDA, there’s a removable top cap, featuring a low profile black Delrin drip tip. The top cap can be freely rotated to adjust the top airflow through two medium sized airflow slots on the main chamber.

At the bottom of the RDA are two large cyclops airflow slots, which are adjusted by rotating the main barrel of the RDA. The barrel is held in place with the base by two substantial o-rings but still rotates smoothly. There’s no notch or locking mechanism with this RDA, which is a shame.

At the base is where we find a gold-plated 510 pin, which can be replaced by the supplied squonk pin, and the usual printed branding. The only other branding on the RDA comes in the form of a laser etched ‘BTFC’ across the main barrel.

Augvape BTFC RDA

Style

Unfortunately, it’s this laser-etched logo that detracts from an otherwise simple and very elegant looking RDA.

I think it’s a combination of the type of font, the size, and the rather unexciting ‘BTFC’ name, which lead to the logo looking a bit out of place.

I would’ve preferred to have seen the logo subtly engraved into the barrel.

Other than that, I have no complaints whatsoever about the styling of the BTFC RDA.

Augvape BTFC RDA

Build Quality

Augvape is always up there when it comes to excellent build quality at an affordable price, and I have to say the BTFC is no exception.

Everything feels machined to perfection, with perfect tolerance on all the o-rings.

There’s a real feel of quality to this RDA due to the amount of stainless steel on the chunky barrel and ample build posts.

Augvape BTFC RDA

Innovation

I’m not sure I would class dual bottom and top airflow on an RDA as innovative.

However, the way Augvape and VapnFagn have tried to implement it is undoubtedly original and quite impressive. But unfortunately not without its slight flaws which we will get onto later.

Build Deck9.5
Augvape BTFC RDA

The build deck of the BTFC looks quite simplistic but has such a considered design behind it.

I really appreciate when designers and manufacturers try to make it easy to build on an RDA, with both dual and single coil options. The BTFC is undoubtedly easy to build on.

Basically, we have two blocks on either side of the deck which are raised, and feature two airflow holes and post holes in the center, on a ramped edge, and then post screws are on the outside slant of the block.

You simply slot you coil legs diagonally through the post holes, and naturally your coils will be sitting above the posts and directly the airflow holes. This very minimal adjusting to make sure they are in the right place.

Augvape BTFC RDA

The only thing to be aware of is if you are using unusually thick wire on a large inner diameter build, it’s quite cramped as there’s not much space between the two coils. I’ve primarily been using stapled Clapton’s at 3mm ID and had no issues.

Tightening down on the hex posts screws is incredibly easy due to their position on the outside edge, and the coils legs feed-through holes on the outside beneath those screws which make them easy to trim. The outside of the posts is actually squared off, so there is a gap between them and the barrel. This will help avoid any shorts, but it’s still worth trimming the leads as close as possible.

Augvape BTFC RDA

Wicking

The BTFC has humongous juice wells on either side of the deck.

This means it’s amazingly easy to wick and you can be quite generous with the amount of cotton you place down there.

I’ve had no issues with it wicking even when I think I’ve overstuffed the cotton; it’s really forgiving especially in squonk mode.

Augvape BTFC RDA

Squonking

This RDA just wants to be squonked.

It’s absolutely fine to uses as a dripper because the juice tends to stay away from the airflow slots as the coils cover them, so it then channels down to the juice well.

However, squonking is quite a joy with the BTFC despite it essentially being a bottom airflow deck.

The deck (and therefore airflow holes) are raised so high that you really have to go some to oversquonk.

Between the two posts is a solid platform that covers the center pin which has slots on either side wall. So when juice enters into the deck, it spreads evenly in the spacious juice wells and has so much room before it even reaches the platform, let alone the coils.

It truly is an excellent RDA for squonking.

Performance9.0
Augvape BTFC RDA

In general, I was extremely impressed with the performance of the BTFC RDA. However, it does have its quirks and performance is a little dependant on how you like your airflow.

Firstly the BTFC is capable of being run in single coil mode, while the performance wasn’t bad, it was a little lacking in flavor. However that’s understandable because of the positioning of the airflow, and I was only using 3m ID coils. I’m pretty confident if you place a chunkier coil in there it will be a little more prominent on flavor and actually a decent universal RDA.

In my opinion, though this RDA is built to run in dual coil mode, the dual airflow slots just scream out for it.

It’s great that you have the ability to use both top and bottom airflow, but it doesn’t always work as expected – which I’ll explain below in the airflow section.

If like me, you are a fan of bottom airflow and like a smooth, flavorful vape,
the BTFC can certainly deliver it. In fact, it more than delivers, it’s excellent in bottom airflow mode.

Top airflow, on the other hand, is a little more complicated. However, it can unquestionably chuck the clouds with super smooth airflow if that’s what you are in to.

Augvape BTFC RDA

Flavor

Getting the BTFC to rock good flavor is pretty easy. The coil positioning is a no-brainer, and for the best flavor, it has to be only in bottom airflow mode.

Unfortunately, as soon as you open the top airflow the flavor gets a little bit muted. It’s still passable, but with so much airflow it’s inevitable you’ll lose a little flavor.

Top airflow only just doesn’t cut the mustard either, but there’s a good reason behind this which I’ll explain below.

But as a bottom airflow squonkable RDA, I’ve been loving the flavor the BTFC gives out.

Personally, I like a slightly restricted vape, and found cutting the bottom airflow down by a third was the perfect sweet spot.

Augvape BTFC RDA

Airflow

There’s a bit of a design flaw when it comes to the airflow of the BTFC. It’s one that might make or break whether it’s right for you.

Basically, both the top and bottom airflow slots are in line on the main barrel. With the bottom airflow completely open they sit perfectly positioned with your coils inside. However, as soon as you close off the bottom airflow, the top airflow holes move out of line also.

So if you wanted to use the BTFC in just top airflow mode, your top airflow is not directly positioned towards the center of your coils, it’s actually way off.

If you want a bit of both airflows, it’s less of a problem because naturally you’ll won’t be as far out (because you’ll have the bottom airflow open), and the air coming up from beneath the coils helps push the flavor through.

All that being said this RDA has so much airflow if you want it, and it’s unbelievably smooth.

Ultimately I think it works best as a bottom airflow RDA. But if you love big clouds, then rocking it fully open on top and bottom airflows will deliver copious amounts.

Verdict

Augvape BTFC RDA

While the BTFC RDA isn’t perfect, it is mightily impressive on a lot of fronts.

Firstly the build deck is just a dream to work with. It’s so simple to position coils and trim coil legs.

Secondly, it’s a bottom airflow RDA that is pretty leakproof. The bottom airflow positioning is not only great to push maximum flavor, but is also raised so high it will take some to get it to leak while squonking.

Then there’s the super smooth airflow and a plethora of airflow options.

While the BTFC might not be ideal in every airflow configuration, as I mentioned above (the top airflow going out of sync when bottom airflow is adjusted), it does give the user plenty of options. I think most will use it with the bottom airflow open as that’s where the flavor is best, so it shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Before I received the BTFC, I was primarily using the Drop Dead as my dual coil RDA. However, the BTFC still resides on my Basium squonker as my daily driver, and that shows you just how much I rate this RDA.
