We recently reviewed the Smok Majesty Kit and were pleasantly surprised that Smok (who were making a name for themselves with sub-par quality control) had actually upped their game with regards to build quality. The MAG Kit I believe kicks on even further from this; it clearly has a solid paint coating and all the little accents, curves, and grooves are well-thought out – especially the ‘MAG’ style battery clip.

Yes, the MAG has a battery clip just like that of a real pistol. There’s a little silver release button/knob just below the trigger on the side of the screen. Once pressed, the battery clip is released and drops out like a gun magazine… hence the name. The battery clip holds the batteries in series and is clearly marked. It is made out of aluminum with a paint coated base and has slits on either side for battery venting. Clipping the battery clip back is just like you’d imagine, pushing it firmly back into the mod you hear and feel a satisfying click like a real magazine. It fits solidly in place, and there is no sign of rattle on our devices.

At first, I thought the position of the release button was going to be a nightmare, with constant accidental presses launching the clip and batteries all over the place. However, they have done an excellent job with it, whichever hand you hold the MAG in your fingers and palms don’t encroach the button, and it does require a firm press to release – so it is a complete non-issue.

Where I do have a slight problem, is with the design of the 510 plate. Smok has decided to have the top of the mod slant at an angle. This means in order to make atomizers sit straight the 25mm 510 plate looks awkward; it’s more raised at the back. Additionally, the MAG is capable of fitting up to 30mm atomizers due to its 30mm width, but there is always an unsightly gap with anything larger than the plate. Personally, I don’t believe they are gaining much lookswise in having the top angled, and would have preferred the plate to sit flush.

Whether you like or hate the fact that Smok has designed the MAG to look like a pistol grip, there is no denying that this is absolutely one of the most ergonomic and comfortable devices to hold and fire. Everything just aligns perfectly with your hand, and it feels oddly natural to gently squeeze the trigger button with your index finger to fire the device. It’s equally comfortable in both hands. However, I mainly use my mods in my right hand, and that means I can’t see the screen during use, which is a bit annoying – it’s definitely better suited to left-hand use, especially as you can’t thumb fire it as well.

The MAG is a large and bulky device, it measures in at 92mm by 65mm and 30mm wide and weighs a whopping 265g without batteries or a tank. I don’t notice the weight and size so much because it is so ergonomically friendly, but it’s not something you are going to want to put in your pocket as a portable kit. In fact, it’s not really a mod that I would want to be seen using in public…..yes it would get a lot of attention, but I prefer a sleek and stealthly look.

The MAG uses the same board as the Majesty, so, therefore, has the same positives and negatives.

The MAG is capable of firing up to 225W. This is not a wattage level that I typically vape at, so I couldn’t tell you if it’s a true 225W but I’d suspect due to it using dual 18650’s it would fall a little shy.

Nevertheless, the MAG does perform remarkably well in wattage mode, especially at the 40-100W range that I mainly used it with the included Prince tank and coils (more on this later). There doesn’t seem to be much of a delay when firing, and the inclusion of soft, normal and hard pre-heat settings do their job.

I would still like to be able to control my vape experience a little more with custom power curves, but I think for most the wattage mode will be a joy to use.

This is where things fall apart slightly. Yes, it is capable of firing all the usual TC materials and has an easy to adjust TCR value for each. But it really isn’t a pleasant Temp Control experience. The board seems to take forever to fire in TC mode, and then it’s not exactly a smooth vape from there on.

There are far better boards for Temp Control in the same price range, and I hope it is something SMOK address in the future.

The MAG is firmware upgradable, so who knows maybe they will come up with an update to improve the performance further down the line.

The Prince tank that comes included in the kit is colored to match the accents of the mod, and they do go together extremely well.

The tank uses Smok’s extremely popular TFV12 coils and comes with a 0.12ohm V12 T10 Core Coil (rated for 60-120W), and a 0.4ohm V12 Prince-Q4 Core Coil (rated for 40-100W).

The Prince tank features Smok’s convenient top-fill design, but this time with a simple small button that needs to be pressed to release the mechanism. It comes with two sized glass tubes, a 5ml capacity standard straight glass tube, and a huge 8ml capacity bubble tank.

I actually think it looks best with the bubble tank, and believe me the way these coils go through juice you are going to need the 8ml capacity.

It is an extremely airy tank that produces bundles of vapor with either coil. I got a lot better flavor at lower wattages with the 0.4ohm coil. In fact, I was forced to use that coil more because the 0.12ohm coil gave me a few dry hits after running a couple of tanks through it – one reason I’m not a fan of sub-ohm tanks. I’m not sure if this was bad luck, but it is something to keep an eye on with stock coils.

Despite my misfortune with one of the coils, I still think this is one of the best sub-ohm tanks I have tried to date for overall performance, and rounds off the kit nicely.

Hmmm… Can I leave the verdict to someone else?

Ok, so I’m unquestionably not a fan of the concept. I’m also not a fan of the size of the MAG for a dual 18650 mod. There are far more compact and better-performing devices (especially in Temp Control) on the market.

However, there is no denying that the MAG as a mod, actually, as a whole kit has probably the best build quality that I have seen from SMOK to date. Which is impressive in its own right; due to it being such a different design with different moving parts from typical devices.

The Prince tank is also an excellent sub-ohm tank, one that I would probably have no hesitation recommending.

But the big question is can I recommend the MAG kit as a whole?

I’m sorry… I just can’t.

It is ergonomically a joy to use, but the MAG is not a kit that I would personally have in my collection, and I certainly wouldn’t feel comfortable using it in public or around impressionable kids. So I really can’t recommend something that wouldn’t use myself, that paired with the fact it’s not the most affordable kit on the market.

That is just my personal opinion though. I’m sure the MAG 225W Kit is certainly going to appeal to a particular niche of vapers – but that is just not me.
