Intro

The Surge Pod Kit is an innovative new pod system from Innokin.

The Surge uses Ultrasonic Vaping Technology which atomizes e-liquid into vapor through high-speed vibration.

The Surge is powered by an ultrasonic vaping chip that vibrates at a super-high frequency (3 million hits per second) to split e-liquid into a cloud of aerosol.

This means there are zero dry hits, no burnt taste, and no liquid goes to waste.

The Surge uses pre-filled pods and has a 700mAh battery with USB-C charging.

The Surge is available in 5 colors: Black, Space Grey, Spartan Green, Sunset Pink, Aurora Purple.

The Good

Excellent build quality, easy-to-use, Ultrasonic technology, no dry hits, use every drop of juice, smooth airflow, good flavor.

The Bad

Slightly cool and dry vape, Pre-filled – so limited flavor range.

The Bottom Line

The Surge is actually a very impressive kit. The Ultrasonic technology works better than previous style kits and is comparable to some pods systems. It delivers a flavorful vape with no burnt taste or dry hits. The vape is a little on the cool side, and it is currently only available with pre-filled pods. However, that does make it an excellent choice for beginners or smokers.

Design & Style

The Surge is such an interesting pod system on so many levels.

The most exciting aspect of the Surge pod kit is the technology behind it. We have seen Ultrasonic technology used in vapor before from Usonicig with their Rhythm and Zip pod kits. But it’s never really taken off or delivered the vape experience of traditional vape coils.

While the technology promises so many benefits over standard heating coils, it always felt a little early in its development to compete. Has that changed with the Surge?

You’ll have to continue reading the review to find out.

The second interesting thing about the Surge vapor kit is that it’s designed and manufactured by Innokin – a brand synonymous with making excellent entry-level vapes to help users quit smoking.

That’s not the strange part, as this fits perfectly in their wheelhouse and target demographic. The weird part is that you’d actually be hard-pressed to know it was an Innokin product.

Innokin Surge Pod Kit

All the branding on the box and device is ‘Surge,’ with a tiny ‘manufactured by Innokin’ on the reverse of the packaging. I get that they are trying to keep it clean and appeal to a new audience. I’m just surprised that a vape company renowned for excellent build quality doesn’t make more of a point of that.

Once you hold the device in your hand, you can tell it has excellent build quality, just like you’d expect from Innokin.

It’s a simple device with no buttons and is activated by auto-draw. There’s a nice ‘Surge’ logo on the front that lights up when active and shows the battery status through the color LEDs.

There’s also a USB Type-C port for charging on one side and a small airflow whole on the other, with some venting holes on the device’s base. Otherwise, it’s an immaculate and sleek-looking pod kit.

The pods are 1.8ml pre-filled pods (which we’ll cover later). They slide perfectly into the top of the device. The magnetic connection is perfect for holding them in place but not too strong to make them challenging to remove.

Overall I think the Surge is one of the nicest looking, well-constructed pre-filled pod systems on the market.

Note:

After writing the review, it’s been brought to my attention that Usonicig has an almost identical kit called the ‘Usonicig Chic Pod.’ I know Usonicig were the pioneers of Ultrasonic technology in vapes, and it’s unclear whether they are a subsidiary of Innokin or whether they subsequently purchased the company and technology. Either way, we are pretty sure you’ll get the same vape experience from the Chic Kit as you will from the Surge.

Features

The Surge Pod kit is a simple device, so it lacks features.

However, it does utilize Ultrasonic vaping technology. This works by using Ultrasonic frequency at 3.0MHz to vibrate the e-liquid causing vapor.

This means there is no heating of wires, and vapor is created at lower temperatures producing fewer potential toxins. There will be no dry hits, no burnt taste, clean flavor to the last drop of e-liquid.

The Surge has an internal 700mAh battery that charges via USB Type-C at 1.5A with a 30 minute charge time.

The device uses auto-draw activation, and there is an LED light to show battery status:

White = more than 20%

Red = less than 20%

Performance

We can’t talk about the performance without comparing it with other Ultrasonic technology vapes that have come before it.

The issue I had with the Usonicig Rhythm and Zip is that they had pretty long ramp-up times, and the vapor they produced was on the cold side and a little lacking.

Thankfully things are a lot better with the Surge. It is pretty instant to fire from the auto-draw (which is smooth), there’s plenty of vapor, and it’s a nice draw.

However, it is still quite a cool vape. This was slightly hard to gauge as the flavors I tested were the Watermelon Ice and Blueberry Ice, which both have cooling in them. I also think the cooling effect is far too strong (which seems to be the case with most nowadays). It might be slightly different when using the regular tobacco flavors.

That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor delivered from the Surge. As they claim, that flavor doesn’t really deteriorate throughout the vape.

Innokin Surge Pod Kit

Is it as good as a Caliburn or other high-quality pod system on the market? No.

But I think the technology or the coilless design has undoubtedly improved. This may also be helped by the fact that they are pre-filled pods, which wasn’t the case with the Usonicig devices.

I would love to see a refillable option, just to see how good my usual juice would taste in the Surge.

Another thing to mention about the quality of the vape is that it’s also a little dry. Again this could come down to the juice itself, but I suspect it’s more to do with the temperature and ultrasonic.

However, all of this is me comparing it to other pods that I’m used to vaping with. If you gave this to someone who is a smoker, I’m sure that’d be incredibly happy with it.

The build quality is excellent; there are no dry hits, no coils to worry about, no leaking, and it delivers good flavor.

Good Vibes

  • Excellent build quality
  • Ultrasonic technology
  • Easy to use
  • No dry hits
  • Use every last drop of juice
  • Instant auto-draw
  • Good flavor
  • Smooth airflow
  • Type-C fast charging

Bad Vibes

  • Slightly cool and dry vape
  • Pre-filled – so limited flavor range

Verdict

The Surge Kit by Innokin is definitely the best Ultrasonic coilless vape kit I’ve tried.

It delivers a far better vape experience than the Usonicigs that have come before it, and I think the technology is getting closer to going more mainstream.

The device’s build quality is excellent, and it could be the ideal type of kit to give to a beginner or someone looking to quit smoking.
