Joyetech Exceed Edge
Joyetech has been one of the most prolific and notable manufacturers when it comes to all-in-one devices and vape pens.
So it’s no surprise to see them release a device that is set to take on the evergrowing pod mod category.
The Exceed Edge is a crossover between a vape pen and a refillable pod mod. It features a 2ml capacity cartridge, changeable EX-Coils and is powered by an internal 650mAh battery.
It is also a unique and stylish looking device, let’s hope it vapes as good as it looks.
Looks great, decent battery life, excellent smooth draw, and good flavor. It uses EX-Coils and has a dedicated fire button.
A little on the heavy side for a pod-style system, and a slightly loose MTL draw.
The Bottom Line
While technically this is more of an all-in-one device than a pod mod, it’s difficult not to compare it. The Edge ‘Exceeds’ most of the other systems on the market with excellent design & build quality, great vape experience, and the ability to simply just replace the coil. An excellent starter kit by Joyetech.
Joyetech likens the design of the Exceed Edge to that of a sports car; I don’t quite see it myself. At first glance, I think it could actually be mistaken for a mini shaver or nose hair trimmer.
But you definitely don’t want to be sticking this device up to your nose!
One thing is for certain; it’s unquestionably a unique looking device. In a time when all pod mods are hard to tell apart, it’s refreshing to see that Joyetech still like to walk their own path on the design front.
I genuinely like the design of the Exceed Edge, as it seems to strike a good balance between pure aesthetics and function.
The build quality of the device is evident as soon as you remove it from the less than quality packaging (ours came in a rather basic plastic tube, but it is a pre-release sample, so hopefully the packaging gets an upgrade on release).
The Exceed Edge is a well-balanced mix of glossy paint and a matte finish fire button. That’s right; this is one of the few refillable pod mods that actually features a fully functional fire button – and its a large one.
The firing button covers a good portion of the rear of the Edge, at a little over 2 inches long, and is the only place you’ll find subtle branding on the device. It is in the perfect place when vaping as your thumb naturally rests on the button, making it super easy to fire.
The only real sports car styling comes from the two LED lights on the base of the mod, which have a nice red glow when you fire the device and indicate battery level through flashing. Also on the base, you’ll find the micro USB for charging.
The one thing that did surprise me with the Exceed Edge is it’s a bit on the hefty side, weighing in at 74g. While this does undoubtedly add to the solid feel and quality of the device, it does make me wonder if it’s a little bit too heavy for a portable pod mod.
However, that extra weight is partially down to the 650mAh internal battery which compared to the 250-350mAh of some of its competitors, is a decent trade-off.
The racy curved design and available colors point this to being a slightly more masculine device, which in my opinion is possibly a good thing as we have far too many dinky delicate pod mods all-in-ones on the market.
One thing is for sure; the Exceed Edge does have exceptional build quality for such a small device.
Technically the Exceed Edge doesn’t use pods. It uses a refillable cartridge and replaceable coils.
In fact, the coils it utilizes are the EX-Coils (the same as the exceed D19 & D22). It comes with two 1.2-ohm coils in the box, and finding replacements will be a damn site easier and cheaper than having to buy a whole other pod.
The pod has a 2ml capacity and a unique flute/whistle like shape mouthpiece.
At first, I was skeptical about this design choice, but I have to tell you it feels perfect in the mouth, and within in a couple of hours of using it, I wondered why more devices don’t come with this style.
Each pod comes with a small anchored rubber plug on the side of the base in order to refill. It’s easy to open and reveals a nice decent sized fill port, and you can clearly see your juice filling the pod.
The pod has a knurled ring at the base, which is easy to remove. To replace or change your coil you simply screw the coil into the ring and then screw that into the base of the pod – it couldn’t be easier.
The pods themselves are friction fit, but go into the battery seamlessly, no wobble or play, and are easy to quickly remove.
The only negative with the pods is that they only include one in the kit.
Operating the Exceed Edge is quite simple, it’s 5 clicks of the fire button to switch on/off.
After each release of the fire button, the LED indicators light up to show how much battery is left.
The LEDs indicate as follows:
- Solid 60-100% battery life
- Slowly flashes 30-59% battery life
- Moderate flashes 10-29% battery life
- Flashes frequently 0-9%
The battery life from the 650mah internal battery is very decent, but it’s also nice to see when it’s time to recharge.

The performance of the Exceed Edge is impressive, and I think it stands clearly above traditional pod mods on the market.
Firstly, let’s not forget this due to the fact it uses standard coils that can be found in other devices, and not some tiny bespoke coil housed in the pod. This is also why it produces really decent flavor.
I was also able to get through 5-6 refills before I even noticed the flavor dropping, and it kept up with any type of juice I threw at it.
Secondly, Joyetech has managed to get super smooth and quiet airflow on the Edge. The only one downside with this is it’s on the airier side of an MTL vape. For me, that’s not a problem, but if you are looking for a very tight MTL starter kit, this is probably not the best choice.
If on the other hand you do like a looser MTL vape and want a small device, that has decent battery life and is not only incredibly affordable to purchase but cheap to run (with only the need for replacement coils, not complete pods) – then the Exceed Edge is a winner.
- Excellent build quality
- Looks good
- Refillable Pods
- Switchable Coils
- Easy to refill
- Ease of use
- Decent Flavor
- Smooth airflow
- The tip feels good on the lips
- Affordable price
- Fairly ‘loose’ MTL
- No spare pod
- Packaging is a little lackluster (official release may be better)
Let’s be clear this may not be in direct competition with closed system pod mods and is slightly more of a vape pen or all-in-one than other open refillable pod mods.
But that’s what makes this device so good.
It trumps most pod mods on battery life, ‘exceeds’ them on flavor production, has smooth airflow and excellent build quality – yet still retains a compact portable and stylish form.
I think the design choices made with the Exceed Edge add to its usability and function, with the comfortable mouthpiece and perfectly positioned fire button.
Joyetech has created an all-in-one device that is a crossover between pod mods and vape pens and in my eyes is one of the best starter kits on the market, and possibly their best to date.
The only one caveat is it’s not suited to those that like an especially tight MTL draw.
If that’s not you, and you’re in the market for an easy to use a portable device with excellent build quality – we absolutely recommend the Joyetech Exceed.
