I’d seen the Pulse BF squonk box a lot on the internet before using one, and I always thought it looked a little cheap and maybe too plasticky.

But when you first lay your hands on it, you realize it isn’t that cheap looking or feeling at all. In fact, the ABS nylon has a solid almost grainy matt finish to it that is actually quite nice in the hand.

And it’s a lot more solid than you’d expect. I’m pretty certain you’d struggle to break or even damage the plastic with extreme force. If you dropped it from a height, the only thing that would probably happen is the side panels popping off.

I really like the way they decided to go with two removable panels, it makes removing the battery super easy and gives the users the ability to style it up with different colors. However, it’s the way that they designed the panels which is even more impressive. The magnets and notches hold everything in place perfectly, there’s no play whatsoever and removing each of them is a breeze.

Due to the ABS Nylon construction, the Pulse BF is also incredibly light, even with a battery and full bottle of juice, I barely notice when I have in my pocket.

The internals are clean and tidy, which is what you want from a mechanical squonker. There’s plenty of room for a 20700 or an 18650 (with adapter) alongside the squonk bottle.

The 510 seems solid, and it’s capable of holding up to 25mm atomizers with no overhang.

The oversized fire button is the only slight let down in my opinion. Yes, it does look different and is easy to find with your finger or thumb. But it is a little mushy to press, it doesn’t require much of a press to fire…..but it does feel a little cheap and took me some getting used to.

However you’ve got to remember this is a budget mechanical squonker, it’s not going to feel all premium and classy like your regulated box mods. Its main purpose is to be simple, easy to use, durable and affordable.

I think on the design and build quality front the Pulse BF even goes a few steps further; it’s unique, stylish, lightweight, compact and incredibly comfortable to use.

You don’t always get locking switches on mechanical squonk boxes. But I’m really glad that Tony B and Vandy Vape took the effort to include one, as they knew this was going to be a squonker released to the masses – and safety is always the most important part of vaping.

It’s not the easiest to access; you have to remove a panel to flick the switch, which then breaks the circuit. But from my experience, it’s possibly a better solution than some others I’ve seen, because it actually works! – It will not accidentally slide or move in your pocket.

It’s a simple yet clever safety feature that works extremely well.

I’ve heard some negatives about the silicon squonk bottle included with the Pulse BF, which is that it’s too soft, and there are better ones available.

I think it’s great; yes it’s soft, but not too soft. Just the perfect amount of pressure is needed on the squeeze to force the juice up. It’s also easily accessible through the side panel and I’ve never had any moments of pressing it by mistake.

The only one niggle I have is the lack of knurling on the top. The threads are all nice and smooth. But just having a little bit of knurling would make it easier to unscrew and refill.

It’s a good squonk bottle, with a good squonk action, that can hold 8ml of juice, and I don’t think you need to sort a replacement like with other squonkers.

It’s just a shame they only include one in the kit.

Some reviewers have said that the Pulse BF doesn’t hit as hard as other squonkers, possibly due to a little voltage drop caused but the locking switch design.

In all honesty, I didn’t notice it at all, it hit’s perfectly fine to me. However, you have to appreciate that it also comes down to a combination of things; like the resistance of your coil and the battery you are using.

I found it hit best using an 18650 over a 20700 battery, and that was with a 0.2ohm build in the Hellvape Dead Rabbit.

Whether something hits ‘hard’ or not is a little down to your preference, and other devices and setups you’ve tried. I’m sure there may be some voltage drop there, but for me, it was pretty negligible – the Pulse BF produced a solid vape throughout my use.

The oversized spongy fire button will take some getting used to with its short throw, and I can see it being a turn off for some. But after a few hours of vaping, I soon adapted to it.

I’ve used a lot of devices and squonk mods in my time, but I don’t think I’ve used any that will have as much of an impact on the industry as the Pulse BF.

Tony B and Vandy Vape hit it out of the park. They knew exactly who they were building this device for, and chose the right materials and design to achieve it.

It is a budget squonker for the everyday vaper; it can take both 18650 and 20700 batteries and can even be personalized with different color side panels.

I think it looks great with its clean, simplistic lines and logos. It’s solidly put together and will be incredibly durable.

The fire button may not be to everybody’s liking, but when a well-built mechanical squonk mod is this affordable, it doesn’t have to be perfect.

The Pulse BF squonk box has now set the bar when it comes to affordable mechanical squonkers, and I expect a lot of competition to be heading its way from other manufacturers. But just like it’s solid nylon construction – it will certainly take some beating.
