Design & Build Quality

When I first laid eyes on the VOOPOO VMATE MAX, I was impressed by its sleek, gem-like design.

It’s all clean lines and smooth curves, with a satisfying heft that speaks to its quality construction. The device measures 103mm x 29mm x 18.7mm, making it slightly larger than some of its competitors, but still pocketable.

The VMATE MAX’s body is made from zinc alloy, giving it a solid feel and a bit more weight at 79g. It’s not the lightest pod vape out there, but that extra heft lends a premium feel that I quite enjoy.

All the seven color options, sport a nice satin finish that looks understated yet professional.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the front panel, which houses what VOOPOO calls the “Hidden Horizon” screen and “Dual 256-color RGB Light Bar.”

When inactive, you’d never know there was a screen there at all. But press the button or take a draw, and the small 0.6″ screen springs to life, flanked by those eye-catching RGB light bars. It’s a neat party trick.

On the side, you’ll find a single button that’s clicky and responsive. It’s not used for firing (this is an auto-draw device), but rather for navigating the device’s various modes and features. The positioning feels natural, and I never found myself fumbling to find it.

Flip the device around, and you’ll spot the airflow adjustment slider on the back. It’s a bit different from previous VMATE models, sliding right to open and left to close. The slider is relatively firm, allowing for precise micro-adjustments. However, I did find it was a little too sensitive to accidental movements.

The bottom of the device features a rubber pad, which helps it stand upright on flat surfaces. It’s a small touch, but one that shows VOOPOO’s attention to detail.

The pods snap into place with a satisfying click, held in by a combination of pressure-fit and weak magnets. While I prefer stronger magnets, I never had issues with pods coming loose.

The entire pod is visible when inserted, which is great for checking e-liquid levels, although the slight tinting of the pods can make this a bit tricky in low light.

Overall, the VMATE MAX exudes quality from every angle. It’s clear that VOOPOO put a lot of thought into tweaking the design. It’s a device that’s both visually striking and pleasant to use. While it may be a touch larger and heavier than some competitors, the premium feel more than makes up for it in my book.

Features

Where the VMATE MAX really shines is in its feature set. It’s got everything you’d expect from a modern pod system and then some.

First up, we’ve got adjustable wattage with a range of 5-30W. This is a step up from previous VMATE models and gives you more control over your vaping experience. The device offers two main output modes: Shift mode and Power mode.

Shift mode is like a beginner-friendly wattage mode. It doesn’t let you select an exact wattage, but instead offers three preset options:

• SPT (Sport): High wattage output for maximum flavor and warmth.
• NOR (Normal): Sets the wattage to the optimal output for your pod, balancing flavor, warmth, and coil life.
• ECO: Reduced power for maximum battery life and e-liquid conservation.

You can cycle through these modes by pressing the button three times. It’s simple and effective, perfect for those who don’t want to fiddle with exact wattages.

For the more experienced vapers, there’s Power mode. This gives you true adjustable wattage in 1W increments from 5-30W. You can switch between Shift and Power modes by pressing the button five times to enter the menu.

The VMATE MAX also features fully adjustable airflow via the slider on the back. This lets you dial in your perfect draw, from a tight MTL to a restricted DL. It’s smooth and easy to adjust, even on the fly.

One of the standout features is the hidden OLED screen. It’s tiny at just 0.6″, but it packs in a lot of info. You’ll see your current mode/wattage, battery life, coil resistance, and puff counter.

The screen is flanked by those fancy RGB light bars, which can be turned off with a double press of the button if they’re not your thing.

The device is powered by a 1200mAh internal battery, which is a significant upgrade from previous models. It also supports 2A fast charging via USB-C, promising a full charge in about 35 minutes. Plus, it’s got pass-through charging, so you can vape while it’s plugged in.

Overall, the VMATE MAX packs a lot of features into a compact package.

Pods/Coils

Let’s talk pods. The VMATE MAX uses VOOPOO’s latest VMATE V2 pods, and there’s plenty to like here.

In the box, you get two pods:

• A 0.4Ω pod for restricted DTL vaping (17-22W range)
• A 0.7Ω pod for MTL vaping (13-16W range)

Both pods have a 3ml e-liquid capacity (2ml for TPD regions) and are made of PCTG plastic with a side-fill design. The fill port is located just above where the pod sits in the device, so you can easily refill without removing the pod. Just pull back the rubber plug and you’re good to go.

These new V2 pods are what VOOPOO calls “3X” upgraded. They claim significant improvements in lifespan, leak resistance, and flavor production. According to VOOPOO, these pods can handle up to 90ml of e-liquid and last for 30 days without leakage. That’s a bold claim, and while I haven’t been able to test it to that extent, I can say I’ve been impressed with their performance so far.

One minor gripe I have is that the pods are slightly too tinted. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it can make it a bit tricky to check your e-liquid level in low light conditions.

The pods pressure-fit into the VMATE MAX with a bit of magnetic assistance. It’s much easier to attach and remove them compared to some previous VOOPOO models I’ve tried. Just make sure to push the pod in all the way for a secure fit.

Compatibility-wise, the VMATE MAX can use all previous VMATE pods, which is great if you’re upgrading from an older model.

However, note that the new 0.4Ω pod isn’t compatible with older VMATE devices due to its higher power requirements.

Overall, I’m really impressed with these pods. The flavor is on point, wicking keeps up well even with high VG e-liquids, and I haven’t experienced any leaking or dry hits. The longevity seems good too, though I’ll need more time to verify VOOPOO’s 90ml claim.

Performance

So how does the VMATE MAX actually vape? I’ve put both pods through their paces, and I’ve got to say, I’m impressed.

Let’s start with the 0.4Ω pod. I tested this with both 70VG/30PG freebase (6mg) and 50/50 nic salts (25mg), and it handled both like a champ. With the airflow wide open, you get a nice restricted direct-lung hit. Close it down about halfway, and you’re in loose MTL territory.

The flavor from this pod is fantastic. I found myself gravitating towards the 25-30W range, which gave me a warm, dense vape with tons of flavor. The vapor production is impressive for a pod system, and I never experienced any dry hits or leaking, even with chain vaping.

The 0.7Ω pod is where this device really shines for MTL vaping. I used 50/50 nic salts (35mg) with this one, and it was a match made in heaven. With the airflow nearly closed, you get a satisfyingly tight MTL draw that’s perfect for higher nic juices. Open it up a bit, and you’re in loose MTL territory.

I found the sweet spot for this pod to be around 15-18W. At this range, you get a nice balance of flavor and vapor without it getting too warm. The flavor is crisp and clean, and the throat hit with nic salts is spot on.

The airflow adjustment on the VMATE MAX deserves a special mention. It’s smooth and precise, allowing for micro-adjustments that can really dial in your perfect draw. However, I did notice that the airflow control can be a bit sensitive. A slight bump can change your setting, so keep an eye on that.

Auto-draw activation on the VMATE MAX is responsive and reliable. I never had any misfires or weak hits, even when taking gentler puffs. It’s as good as any auto-draw system I’ve used.

Battery life is impressive for a device this size. With the 0.7Ω pod at around 15W, I easily got through a full day of moderate vaping. The 0.4Ω pod at higher wattages did drain the battery faster, but I still managed most of a day.

When it was time to charge, the 2A fast charging had me back up and running in about 35 minutes, which is seriously quick.

One quirk I noticed is that the device can get a bit warm during extended vaping sessions at higher wattages. It’s not uncomfortable, but it’s noticeable.

As for pod life, I’ve been using both pods for over two weeks now, switching between them, and they’re still going strong. The flavor is still on point, and I haven’t noticed any significant drop-off. VOOPOO’s claims about improved longevity seem to hold water, though I’ll need more time to fully verify their 90ml claim.

Overall, the VMATE MAX delivers a top-notch vaping experience. Whether you’re after a restricted DL or a tight MTL vape, this device has you covered. The flavor is excellent, the draw is smooth, and the battery life is solid.

Verdict

So, where does that leave us with the VOOPOO VMATE MAX? I can confidently say it’s my favorite VMATE to date and a serious contender in the pod vape market.

The VMATE MAX manages to pack a lot into its sleek frame.

You’re getting a versatile device that can handle both MTL and restricted DL vaping with ease, thanks to its adjustable airflow and power options. The flavor from both pods is top-notch, and the battery life is impressive for a device this size.

Is it perfect? Not quite. The tinted pods and sensitive airflow control are minor annoyances, and it’s a touch larger than some of its competitors. But these are small quibbles in the grand scheme of things.

Who’s this for? I’d say it’s a great option for intermediate vapers who want a bit more control over their vaping experience.

The Shift mode makes it accessible for beginners too, but they might find the feature set a bit overwhelming at first. It’s also a solid choice for anyone who likes to switch between MTL and restricted DL vaping without carrying multiple devices.
