Wismec Luxotic DF Kit

Wismec had a lot of success with the RX line, especially the Gen3. So it seemed only a matter of time that they would transform that same design form into a squonk mod.

However, it seemed to take them quite a while to bring this one to market, but better late than never.

The Luxotic DF is a dual 18650 battery 200W squonk mod which looks remarkably similar to the Wismec RX Gen3. It’s has a large OLED display and is packed with the usual features of Wismec boards.

It comes with the comes with the Guillotine V2 RDA and is available in 4 colors: Black, Blue, Green, and White.

The Good

Solid build quality, decent looks, compact design, fully featured board.

The Bad

Have to open battery door to remove squonk bottle.

The Bottom Line

The Wismec Luxotic DF is a solid dual battery squonker, it delivers with decent performance, and it’s easy to use. It comes paired with an ok, but not great RDA. As a kit, it may not be the best on the market, but it’s definitely worth going for if you find it at a decent price. If you can get the mod by itself then even better.

Wismec Luxotic DF Kit

I was always a fan of the compact, neat looks of the RX Gen3, and the Luxotic DF is no different. It not only looks well-built but feels it also and is comfortable in the hand.

There’s the obligatory Wixmec branding on both sides of the device, but that doesn’t detract too much from the overall clean look of the Luxotic DF Box.

On the front of the device, there is a large 1.3inch OLED display, which takes up most of the front section of the device. It’s a bright and crisp display and has a clear layout displaying all the necessary information like previous Wismec screens.

There Luxotic DF has three buttons to control the device. The first is an oversized metal fire button, which is positioned at the top. It’s easily fired with either your index finger or your thumb and has a solid click to it. Then there are two small adjustment buttons which sit on the bottom part of the screen.

On the backside of the device, you’ll find the cut-out for the squonk bottle, and the 7ml capacity squonk bottle inside. The bottle is adequately squishy and has a well-made metal cap that feels quite secure.

The door panel for the squonk bottle is magnetically attached to the device, and it needs to be pulled in an upwards direction to take it off. One design choice I really don’t welcome on the Luxotic DF is in order to remove the squonk bottle you have to first open the battery door. It’s a bit of a pain, as your battery will slide out, and I think they could’ve come up with a slightly better design like with other dual battery squonkers.

The battery compartment on the Luxotic DF works as you’d expect, it’s well-machined, and I have no issues with batteries getting caught or snagging.

Overall I like the looks and design of the Luxotic DF, is it perfect? No. I guess you could say it’s exactly what you’d expect a squonk version of the RX Gen 3 design to be.

Build Quality

As mentioned above I don’t think there are any glaring issues with the build quality of the Wismec Luxotic DF.

There are no rattles from any of the buttons, the door panels and magnets work sufficiently, and it is a compact but robust device.

Features8.5
Wismec Luxotic DF Kit

The Wismec Luxotic DF is powered by the common Avatar chipset and is capable of outputting 200W with its dual 18650 design.

The Luxotic features all the typical options of wattage mode, TC and TCR modes. It supports Ni200, SS, and Titanium as TC materials. It also has a micro-USB for firmware upgrade and charging.

The 1.3inch screen of the Luxotic DF will display your current wattage or temp setting at the top, with three small hexagons beneath displaying further information like coil resistance, voltage, amperage, and puff count.

The Guillotine V2 RDA comes with two Ultem 810 drip tips (one short, one wide bore), and is made of stainless steel.

It actually has a smart design feature where it can be used in two different ways with the airflow. Firstly you can use it as a standard bottom airflow, with the cutouts of the middle cap sitting beneath your coils. Or alternatively, you can flip the cap and have the airflow holes at the top and use it as a top airflow RDA.

Interestingly, the Guillotine V2 RDA can be used in multiple ways. First, it can be used as a bottom airflow RDA. There are cutouts in the deck that lead directly underneath the coil, and you can get some decent flavor.

The top cap of the RDA is insulated to keep it cool when vaping at high wattages. However, I still found it to get a bit too hot for my liking.

The build deck of the Guillotine V2 features two terminals that have hex screws at the top which clamp down on your coil legs. It’s quite a standard designed dual coil deck, with enough room for 3mm ID coils, it may struggle with anything more substantial.

It does have a rather deep juice well, which is good for both squonking and dripping.

Performance9.0
Wismec Luxotic DF Kit

First of all the performance of the Luxotic DF box mod was very good. IT seems to hit well in wattage mode, and for once I had no issues when testing a Wismec device in TC mode.

However, that was only a brief test, as I prefer to stick to wattage mode with these types of devices. I was generally running the device between 70-100W and noticed very little lag in firing.

The board is easy to use, and I think the Avatar Chipset was quite efficient on the batteries also. I didn’t run any detailed test on the batteries, and of course, it will be dependant on which 18650’s you are using. But on the whole, it didn’t fall short of other dual squonkers that I’ve used recently.

As for the Guillotine V2, I was also pleasantly surprised. It’s not the greatest dual coil RDA, and i wouldn’t intentionally go out and by one. But it’s definitely more than sufficient to come as part of a kit.

Wismec Luxotic DF Kit

It produced better flavor with the bottom airflow set-up, but that was to be expected. However, if you do go with bottom airflow be careful not to over squonk, as it’s not the greatest and several occasions I had juice dripping down onto the mod.

In the top airflow setup, I found it was a little too airy and produced quite a muted flavor even when I tried to cut the airflow down. However, it can push out the clouds, if that’s your thing. It’s also a little tricky to adjust the airflow, but I’m sure a bit of wear and tear on o-rings and some more lubrication it will loosen up.

As for the airflow, it’s actually nice and smooth in either setup; I’ve no complaints there. Again, it’s not the greatest RDA in the world but is a step up from the original Guillotine and pairs reasonably well with the device.

Good Vibes

  • Looks good
  • Compact design
  • Good build quality
  • Easy to use
  • Decent squonking performance
  • Good battery life
  • Quick firing
  • Firmware upgradeable

Bad Vibes

  • Have to open battery door to remove squonk bottle

Verdict

The Wismec Luxotic DF is one of those devices that delivers what you’d expect. It’s a solid dual battery squonker which has a nice comfortable, compact design.

There’s no real bells and whistles to it, and it is good. But I feel like Wismec missed a trick by taken so long to release it. They had the opportunity to really capture the dual squonk mod market when there was little competition.

Now we’ve got the Topside, the Pulse Dual, and even the Rage and Basium, and I think the Luxotic probably sits as average in that pack.

Most will probably change the RDA instead of using the Guillotine V2, but again it’s adequate, and I guess that kind of sums up the whole kit for me – the Wismec DF Luxotic is an adequate dual battery squonker.
