3Build Quality
Wotofo Serpent SMM RTA

Like all the other Wotofo products that have come out recently, the quality of machining is excellent. There are no issues whatsoever with any of the threading, and taking it apart is incredibly easy. The stainless steel they have used feels sturdy and isn’t thin or flimsy.
This RTA is also incredibly compact, especially for a 4ml capacity tank.

Build Deck

I was surprised with the build deck; it is somewhat similar to the one on the Serpent RDTA. However, the SMM doesn’t use clamps, and the have designed it, so the airflow comes in laterally (more on this later).
I’ve not always been a fan of post holes that don’t have walls either side and only rely on a screw to trap the wire. Although this one works surprisingly well, and I hasn’t caused me any issues at all. It’s nowhere near as bad as the post holes on the Icon RDA, which is an absolute pain trapping thinner wire.
The SMM can cope with just about any size wire you want to use. I’ve tried everything from triple core aliens coils to simple 26g round wire, all with great ease. On the whole, it is a such a simple, straightforward deck to use. It is designed really well, which makes the whole building process painless for even the most inexperienced builders.
One great design feature of the Serpent SMM deck is that it’s symmetrical. This means it doesn’t matter about the orientation of your coil; it can go in either way. There’s no need to think about which legs need to go where, because when it’s time to install your coil you can always flip it around, again making the process perfect for beginners.

Building/Wicking

The Serpent SMM has a 7mm gap between the posts, so can get really wild with the builds you use. This also makes it super easy to install any build, like the regularly 3mm coils I use.
The only one slight issue, if you can call it that is; when you screw down on the wire, it tends to grab the wire and slightly twist the coil out of shape, so you need to straighten it again. I usually keep a spare screwdriver or Coilmaster bit in the coil to help prevent it moving. It’s a negligible issue and isn’t a real problem, but might be annoying if like perfection.
Wicking on the Serpent SMM is incredibly easy, and very forgiving. I’ve noticed it doesn’t matter if you stuff too much cotton, or leave it a little too thin. I just make sure each of the wick holes are gently sealed, and it causes me no issues and has not leaked a single drop.
It also easily keeps up while chain vaping, and I have literally emptied a tank without stopping. The flavor is that good it’s hard to stop sometimes.

Top-Filling

The SMM has simple top filling. The threading on the cap is smooth, and the tank doesn’t come apart when the cap is twisted off. I would have preferred a slight bit of knurling to help twist off the top cap, it’s not a major problem, and I’ve now noticed that it’s best not to tighten the top cap completely, which makes it easier to remove later. The fill holes can also fit any sized bottle or dropper. I usually close the airflow while filling, and have had no leaking or seeping.
The only one caveat about the 4ml capacity of the SMM is due to the deep reservoirs beneath the build deck, and below the glass line, it’s hard to see when you are completely out of e-liquid. Which actually leads to you filling it far sooner than you should for a 4ml capacity RTA.

Airflow/Flavor

This RTA is not really for full-on cloud chasers, with the airflow wide open it give the perfect restricted lung hit. If like me (and I guess Matt from Suck my Mod), a restricted lung hit is your preferred style of vaping, you are going to love it. With the airflow wide open and powered at around 55W, you can get a smooth restrictive hit with extremely dense vapor and saturated flavor. I’m a heavy RTA user, and I always prefer single coils, and I have to say the flavor and density of vapor off of the SMM is better than any other RTA in my current rotation. I’ll even go so far to say, when it’s wicked right and has a good build inside, it easily rivals my 22mm flavor RDAs.

Airflow Control

The airflow control has stoppers on each side and has a nice smooth resistance while adjusting. It definitely doesn’t move when it’s not supposed to, but can still be easily moved when you want it to. The airflow itself is smooth, but I do notice a little turbulence, which is due to the side airflow hitting the coil. Other reviewers have said it makes a loud air intake noise, which can be off putting. Honestly, it is a little louder than some RTA’s but only if you are taking a deep lung draw. If you like a restricted lung hit, and always have a smooth draw, it’s barely noticeable.

Likes

  • Amazing flavor
  • Tiny compact size
  • 4ml capacity
  • Incredibly easy build deck
  • Allows forward and reverse coils
  • Great airflow
  • Comes with Ultem drip tip & can use your own

Dislikes

  • Drip tip might not be for everyone – only 510
  • Little tricky to see when liquid level is low
5Verdict

The Serpent SMM is incredibly affordable RTA. It has a great build deck, produces absolutely stunning flavor, and the overall quality is top notch.
It is also a great RTA for beginners to start building with. The build deck design makes it remarkably forgiving to build and wick. I’ve messed around with numerous wicking techniques and builds and have never had a single dry hit, which shows it doesn’t demand consistency or precision.
If you are in the market for a single-coil 24mm RTA and are into flavor more than clouds – this is the best single coil RTA on the market right now, in my opinion. It is compact but can hold a substantial amount of e-liquid. I can’t put mine down, and I am already considering buying another one.
