What are E-Liquid Vape Pens?

What are E-liquid vape pens?

A vape pen is an e-cigarette that looks like a pen and is used to vaporize e-liquid or vape juice.

Most vape pens are small devices that resemble the size of a marker pen, and they all have two distinct parts: the battery and the vape tank. The battery supplies the power to your device and has a “fire” button on the body to activate it.

The tank section is a little more complex, but it contains a reservoir for your e-liquid and an “atomizer head” with a coil and a wick. When you press the fire button, vape juice from the tank reservoir that has seeped into the wick (usually made of cotton) is vaporized. The vapor travels up the tank to the mouthpiece (at the top of the device), where it will be inhaled by the user.

The Anatomy of a Vape Pen

This is how an e-juice vaporizer works in the most basic terms.

Anatomy of a vape pen

Atomizer – This is the part of a vape pen that will heat up when it receives power from a battery and is triggered by pressing the firing button. It usually consists of a type of metal coil.

Battery – This is the power supply for your vape pen. It provides power to the coils of the atomizer, allowing it to heat up and vaporize e-liquid, wax, or dry herb.

Coil – This is a small piece of wire that has been wrapped to create a coil that, when heated, vaporizes e-liquid or wax. They usually contain some kind of material for wicking.

Wick – The wick is the material found in a coil that absorbs e-liquid and wax, so it can sit around the coil and be vaporized. For vape juice, this material is usually cotton, and for wax, quartz, and ceramic, it is commonly used.

Power Button – The power button or fire button is used to engage the battery to start heating the atomizer. Some power buttons also switch off the device if pressed five times continuously.

Mouthpiece – This is the part that you put your mouth on and inhale from. With tanks or clearomizers, you may hear people refer to it as the drip tip, despite the fact you are not dripping liquid into it.

Fill Port – Some vape pens contain what is called a fill port. This opening allows you to easily refill your device while it is still connected to the battery.

Airflow Control – A few vape pens may also have an airflow control (or AFC ring). This allows you to customize the airflow or draw resistance to either Mouth-to-Lung or Direct-to-Lung vaping style.

Charging Port – Many vape pens contain a micro-USB charging port, either on the bottom or the side. This usually also allows for pass-through charging, meaning you can still vape while it is charging. Some, however, do have proprietary cables.

Threading – This refers to the threads on the top of the battery that you screw your atomizer too. Most vape pens have a 510 style threading (and are therefore also classified as 510 threaded batteries).

In some situations, the distinction between a vape pen and a vape mod may be subtle, with tube-style mods, in particular, resembling fat vape pens.

The simple explanation is that a pen-like e-cigarette pen can be called an e-juice vape pen, even if it could also be described as a mod.

Vape pens are also available for “dry herb” or cannabis concentrates classified similarly but operate somewhat differently.

How to Put E-Liquid in a Vape Pen

How to Put E-Liquid in a Vape Pen

The most common thing with all e-juice vape pens is that you have to fill them up with e-liquid.

Nowadays, most e-liquid vaporizer pens have the same methods to be refilled. They will either have a bottom-fill method, where you have to unscrew the base to access the tank. Or they will have a top-fill system, where the top cap of the tank unscrews. The top-fill method is widely accepted as the easiest and less messy.

Each vape tank will have a chimney section in the center of the tank, with the coil situated at the bottom and the mouthpiece connected to the top. This is how the vapor travel when you inhale, from the coil to the mouthpiece. When refilling your vape pen, it’s always important that you don’t get e-juice down the chimney section. Most tanks will have designated fill holes for you to drip your e-juice down. Just ensure your e-juice goes directly into the tank and not the center chimney if it doesn’t.

When using bottom-filling tanks, you will always need to hold the tank upside down while you unscrew the base. As above, always make sure you fill with e-juice directly into the tank and avoid overfilling as e-liquid may spill into the chimney.

Prime your coil – Before you vape

One of the most common mistakes new vapers make is not priming their coils before taking the first vape.

Priming a coil is very straightforward and will help maximize your coil’s lifespan and help avoid any dry hits.

Before filling your tank, you will need to unscrew the base section to access the coil. When looking at the coil, you will notice there is a wicking material inside and wick holes on the outside of the coil. We advise applying e-juice directly to the coil from the top and also through the side wick holes. Then leave it for at least 5 minutes, so it is fully saturated before you start vaping.

Choosing the Best E-Liquid Vape Pen

Choosing the Best E-Liquid Vape Pen

Now you know the basics, let’s cover some factors that will help you find the best e-liquid vape pen for your needs. As you may have noticed, there are many options on the market and several on our shortlist. However, not all of the features will be equal, so the following points may help you decide.

How important is battery life?

In general, devices with larger batteries last longer. So if you are looking for an extremely portable e-liquid vape pen, you might have to compromise on the battery longevity. If, however, battery life is the most crucial factor to you, then choose one with a higher battery capacity. This will be the one with a higher ‘mAh.’

What does mAh mean?

It is an abbreviation for milliamp hours. Basically, all you really need to know is the higher mAh of a designated battery, the longer it will last before requiring a re-charge. Although constant output vape pens have evolved, many vapers eventually progress on to use larger vape mods due to their superior battery life.

How vital is vapor production?

Most new vapers are looking for something to help them quit smoking. If that’s the case, then vapor production or ‘clouds’ probably won’t be of the utmost importance for you. It would be preferable to go for an MTL (mouth-to-lung) style e-juice vape pen, as this closely mimics the inhale draw of a cigarette. Most vape pens are sub-ohm vape pens, but if you are more interested in large vapor production, you will need a sub-ohm e-liquid pen tailored for DTL (direct-to-lung). These are typically the ones with adjustable airflow, lower resistance coils, and larger batteries.

What’s the difference between Mouth to Lung & Direct to Lung inhales?

Covered in the above point about vapor production, there are two different types of inhaling used with vaping. MTL of mouth-to-lung is a two-stage inhale (much like smoking) where the vaper will draw the vapor into the mouth and then down into their lungs. However, DTL vaping or direct-to-lung is just as the name suggests; it’s a single draw of the vapor directly into the lungs.

What e-juice will you be vaping?

All vape liquid consists of VG (Vegetable Glycerin) and PG (Propylene Glycol), along with your desired nicotine level and flavorings. However, the ratio of VG to PG is quite an essential factor. VG is a more viscous liquid that helps produce more vapor, while PG is a thinner liquid that helps deliver the throat hit. Most MTL-style vapers that are trying to mimic smoking will lean towards an eliquid with a good ratio of PG, perhaps 40-50%. Conversely, sub-ohm vapers who are direct-to-lung vaping will go for high VG juices (some even in the 90-100%). However, when using very high VG eliquid, you need to make sure you are using a vape pen, and subsequently, coils that can handle a more viscous liquid.

Most e-juice vape pens actually come with a range of coils, some that can cater to MTL vaping and juices, and others for DTL and high VG juices. Before making a decision, it’s worth looking at the coils available for your chosen e-liquid vape pen.

All-in-one or separate battery and tank?

All-in-one or AIO-style e-juice vaporizers have some advantages and disadvantages over vape pens with separate batteries and tanks. The most significant advantage is that they are incredibly straightforward to use, and you get everything you need in one place. However, the advantage of traditional vape pens is that you can use different tanks if you wish. This means it’s easier to upgrade if you want to get a new tank or if you accidentally damage the tank the vape pen came with. This is why they are better investments if you’re likely to keep vaping, as they are more versatile.

What are you vaping?

If you are looking for the top e-juice vape pens, you’re likely to be more interested in vaping nicotine and avoiding cigarettes. However, vape pens can be used to vape a lot more than just e-juice.

Some vaporizers or vape pens can be used to vape CBD juice, oils, waxes, or even dry herbs. For oils, waxes, and dry herbs, they will require different style atomizers, so it’s usually best to go for a specific vape pen just for those materials. Check out our complete list of best vape pens here.

However, with the prominence of CBD health benefits, there has been a considerable rise in CBD vape juice and vape pens. If you are interested in vaping both nicotine and CBD, then looking for a suitable vape pen for MTL-style vaping should cover you for both. However, if you just want to vape CBD, then take a look at our best CBD vape pens list.

Choosing the best vape pen for you

Here are is a summary of some of the key factors (and more) to consider when looking to purchase the right vape pen for you:

  • Do I want a large refillable vape pen with good battery life or an ultraportable one with less battery life?
  • How much e-liquid/wax/dry herb can this vape pen hold?
  • Does it use micro-USB or USB-C charging, or will you have to carry a proprietary charger?
  • Does the pen have a tight draw for mouth-to-lung vaping or a lot more airflow (direct-to-lung)?
  • Does the pen have airflow adjustment?
  • Does the quality and feel match up with the price tag?
  • Does this reusable vape pen have good reviews?

Conclusion

It’s not straightforward finding the best vape pen for e-liquid. Not because there are not many good options. In fact, quite the opposite, there are so many great options on the market for any type of vaper.

The challenge is finding the right e-juice vape pen for your requirements. Hopefully, we covered enough in this guide to steer you in the right direction and help you make the right choice. For more details on specific devices, take a look at our vape starter kit and vape pen reviews.
