1Intro
Hellvape Dead Rabbit RDA

It seems to be the prominent vaping trend of 2017, manufacturers pairing with YouTube reviews to design and market tanks or atomizers. At first, I thought it was just a good marketing gimmick, but most of the collaboration have produced some great atomizers; like the Serpent SMM RTA (Wotofo & Matt C) or the Pulse 22 & 24 RDAs (Vandy Vape & Tony B).

That’s why I always feel a little extra pressure when reviewing new products inspired or designed by vaping personalities. Simply in fear that a negative review might earn the disdain of thousands of loyal fans. Not that it truly matters, as we have to call them as we see them.

Well, once again my blushes have been saved, thankfully there’s no need for concern with the Hellvape & Heathen collaboration – the Dead Rabbit RDA.

Spoiler alert – this is the RDA I’ve been waiting for!

3Meet the Rabbit
Hellvape Dead Rabbit RDA

The Hellvape Dead Rabbit box contains a good amount of branding for both the company and Heathen. The deceased bunny logo is….well, dividing. Some may like it; I’m not the bunnies biggest fan.

The reason behind the name & branding:

The unique build deck does actually resemble rabbit ears. ‘Dead Rabbits’ is also the name of the Irish American gang from Heathen’s favorite movie Gangs of New York.

Due to the advanced nature of RDAs, where manufacturers assume a wealth of knowledge on the part of the buyer, they can sometimes skimp on the info in the boxes. However, I was pleased to see the back of the box contained an ample amount of information about the contents and RDA features. Hellvape highlight what’s inside the box, and what users can expect from this versatile RDA.

Inside users will get the Dead Rabbit RDA, a resin 810 drip-tip, 510 adapter, gold bottom-feeding pin for squonkers (more on this later), and the usual collection of spare parts.

4Build the Rabbit
Hellvape Dead Rabbit RDA

On disassembling the RDA, you’ll immediately notice the unique build deck. It’s comprised of gold plated positive connection posts and stainless steel negative, giving it a two-colored look. The deck takes the coils in from the top, and it allows the leads to slide through into a gap underneath. This should eliminate some of the guesswork you usually face with postless decks and allow for easier sizing and snipping off excess wire.

Unfortunately, however, this seems better in theory, than in practice. I attempted to feed the leads through a handful of times, but couldn’t quite get the hang of it. So I opted to snip them prior to installing, as usual. You may have better luck, but my impatience got the better of me, and I didn’t want to accidentally bend my coils.

The deck on the Dead Rabbit is raised, and once you get the coils seated, it holds them in place perfectly and has plenty of room for even the most complex builds. I think master coil builders will have a veritable playground with the Dead Rabbit’s build deck.

The airflow on the RDA is nothing special to look at, and I was a little skeptical that it would help provide enough flavor. Though it seems the sloped top-cap design is angled in such a way that it helps push the airflow right to the coil, and the flavor definitely does not disappoint. It produces rich, full-bodied, flavorful clouds – possibly the best I’ve had from any RDA. I usually measure vapor production against my 25mm Goon (it’s become the gold standard), and Dead Rabbit is certainly on par.

The Dead Rabbit RDA can function as either a single or dual-coil device. Though to be honest; I didn’t enjoy the single-coil setup nearly as much. The flavor seemed a little muted, and the airflow and cloud production uneven. I’d say stick to dual coil use to get the best from this RDA.

Hellvape Dead Rabbit RDA

The included 810 Delrin drip-tip is delightful. It remains cool and comfortable in the mouth and is capable of maximum airflow. It is actually one of the best wide-bore tips I’ve used to date. I’m glad they also included the 510-adapter, but the wide bore option gives much better airflow and mouthfeel.

One of the main impressive features of the RDA is the spacious 5mm juice well, which can hold a deceptive amount of juice. It’s supported by the raised build deck, which enabled me to use a decent amount of cotton, and it never dried out ahead of time, even at higher wattages.

That in my eyes is the killer feature of the Dead Rabbit. It’s a huge benefit for squonking fans, and that’s where I think this RDA really beats all others hands down.

5Squonk the Rabbit
Hellvape Dead Rabbit RDA

My bottom-feeder had been sitting on the shelf collecting dust. I decided to break it out and installed the included gold squonk pin to the Dead Rabbit, and I instantly fell in love. Like most vapers, my experience with squonker pins and RDAs has been a bit hit or miss. I feel squonk pins are often just chucked in as an oversight to appease vapers rather than designed to enhance the vaping experience.

Hellvape and Heathen have designed an RDA that maximizes its versatility by being a phenomenal squonker, with absolute leak-free performance.

I can’t stress how much I loved this RDA and the whole squonking experience it brought. The only way to describe it is paraphrasing words of Rip Trippers ‘Vaping is dead….Squonking is the future!’

Likes

  • Amazing flavor
  • Looks clean and simple
  • Deep juice well – great for over-drippers
  • Amazing for squonking
  • Straight-forward wicking
  • The best-included drip tip I have ever seen
  • Single/Dual coil building options
  • Decent fitting o-rings

Dislikes

  • Can potentially disturb the wick when removing the top cap to re-juice
  • Not the easiest to place coils, even though they can be trimmed after (unlike some postless RDAs)
  • I don’t mind the name, not a fan of the imprinted logo (subjective)
6Verdict

This Rabbit is certainly not dead; it’s alive and kicking. It does not belong in a cage; it belongs on top of any squonking device currently on the market. I’m sure we’ll see more advances in squonk mods in the following months, and that is going to make this RDA an even better purchase.

The Hellvape Dead Rabbit RDA isn’t the most original, innovative or even attractive dripper on the market – But it might just be the most complete.

Yes, I wish it functioned a little better as a single-coil device, and that the coil placement was really guess-free work. But when built and wicked correctly, paired with Dead Rabbit’s squonking abilities, it produces amazing airflow and some of the most delectable clouds of vapor I’ve experienced. This might just be the RDA that I measure all others by in the future.
