The Geek Bar J1 is the first disposable vape by Geek Bar that is in the style of a pod vape or vape pen.

The J1 has a 500mAh battery that can be recharged via USB Type C and can be used many times over.

It utilizes pre-filled replaceable 2ml pods that contain a mesh coil and deliver up to 600 puffs per bar. The pod is the disposable part of this kit.

There are currently 11 flavors in the J1 range (with more to come) with a 2% nicotine strength.

The J1 device is available in 6 colors: Black, Lime Coral, Blue Pink, Cyan Yellow, Gradient Coral, and Sky Blue.

Design & Style

The Geek Bar J1 is a two-part disposable kit that solves the main issue we have disposables – constantly disposing of perfectly good battery cells.

The J1 has a battery unit that looks the same as many disposable vape pens on the market. But, then instead, the pod section that contains the pre-filled flavor and mesh coil is removable and replaceable.

It is the best logical step in disposable vape devices, bringing them in line with pod vapes. Of course, you could say the Geek Bar J1 is technically a disposable pod device, not a disposable vape pen.

The device is very straightforward. It contains a 500mAh rechargeable battery, which can be charged via the USB Type C port on the base. This is also where the LED status light is found.

The LED light is a simple white light that will flash when the battery is depleted and needs to be recharged. There are no specifications on the charge rate, but I believe it is only 1A, as it does take a while to complete a charge from flat.

The device has a nice rubber coating, so it’s easy to grip and feels as good in the hand as any small disposable. Geek Bar has several color devices, most of which are two-toned like the ‘Lime Coral’ we have for review.

It’s a shame they didn’t send us some other color variations to check, as I think the all-black is nice and sleek.

The pods hold 2ml of pre-filled juice with a 2% nicotine salt base. It contains a mesh coil (resistance is not specified) and the same cartomizer style wicking as with most disposables. Unfortunately, this means you can’t see your juice level and will only know the pod is depleted when the performance goes.

The pods are entirely black, with the flavor contained inside printed on the section that goes into the device. The mouthpiece is integrated into the pod, and it’s a perfect mouthpiece for a disposable. It is slender and perfect for MTL vaping. 

Connecting the pod to the device is nice and easy. It has two magnetic pins on the base, so as you drop the pod into the opening of the battery, you feel it connect. You may have to rotate the pod slightly to catch and connect the pins.

Sadly, this is where I have a slight issue with the review samples we have been sent. One of the batteries struggled to connect with all of the pods, so it wouldn’t fire when you inhaled.

The rest of the devices were fine, so I’m sure it was just a faulty review sample. However, it is something to be aware of.

Once you have a connection between the pod and battery, the auto-draw trigger on the device works well. Unfortunately, there’s no way to adjust the airflow, but it’s the typical loose to medium draw airflow you get from most disposable devices.

Tropical Skittles Blast

They Say: Sweet finishes with a nice tropical flavor.

Our Vibe: This delivers all the tropical blend of flavors on the inhale as if you’ve just grabbed a handful of skittles and jammed them in your mouth. It has a definite candy taste, and it’s very true to its name. However, I expected it to ‘Blast’ me a little more. It’s not overpowering with sweetness, and while the cooling effect is present, it’s pretty subtle. Still a delightful all-day vape.

Kiwi Passion Fruit Guava

They Say: A complex blend with a juicy taste.

Our Vibe: This is one of my favorite combinations of fruit flavors. I’ve tried it from other brands and really enjoyed it. I’m glad to say the Geek Bar J1 also delivers a sumptuous concoction. All of the fruit flavors are present throughout, but the kiwi hits you upfront on the inhale. Then the unmistakable and delicious Guava rounds it all off on the exhale. One of my favorites from this range that I could easily vape all day….and did!

Mango Smoothie

They Say: Best sweet flavor and the creamiest icy texture.

Our Vibe: I’ve vaped many Mango-flavored vapes, but I don’t think I’ve come across one with such a creamy mix as this one. The Mango is the prominent flavor and hits right from the inhale. It’s a very authentic Mango that’s sweet but has that almost earthy quality to it. It’s then all completely enveloped in such a wonderful creamy foundation. The cream marries perfectly with the Mango, leaving you with both a refreshing and luscious vape.

Cheesy Blueberry Jelly

They Say: Sweet blueberry and mellow cheese melt in your mouth.

Our Vibe: As you may have guessed by the name, this is a Blueberry Cheesecake flavor. It’s very accurate, and you get the individual tastes of the Blueberry, cheesy cream, and graham cracker base come through. The sweetness of the Blueberry is more present on the inhale, followed by the creamy center and the crumbly pastry on the exhale. A solid fruit cheesecake flavor.

Ginger Soda

They Say: Sour, citrusy with a bit of peppery flavor from ginger.

Our Vibe: The two primary flavors of Ginger and Soda are incredibly accurate here. While it’s not a flavor I particularly love, I can appreciate that it is an authentic mix. The Ginger hits you on the inhale, and it’s then smothered in a soda taste which almost fizzes on the tongue for the exhale. Not something I could vape all day, and probably quite an acquired taste.

Lime Cherry

They Say: Exotic blend with a fresh, crisp aftertaste.

Our Vibe: This was a strange one for me. I was expecting either the Lime or Cherry flavor to take prominence, as they are both quite intense flavors. However, it’s kind of an equal balance throughout the vape, and they seem to cancel each other out a little. It still tastes fine, and you can tell it’s cherry and lime, but I expected something a little more. Overall a pretty subdued mix and not the best from this range.

Performance

Despite the issue I had with one of the batteries not making a connection with the pod (which I have put down to a faulty review sample). The J1 device and pods perform just like an all-in-one disposable vape pen.

The auto-draw trigger fires almost immediately on the inhale, and the mesh coil delivers vapor instantly. The draw is on the loose side of an MTL, and I would’ve preferred it a little tighter, but it’s something I’ve become accustomed to testing disposable devices.

The flavor delivered from the replaceable pods is very good. Most of the flavors are punchy and sweet without being too overpowering. In addition, Geek Bar has also done an excellent job of not overloading them with cooling agents. So you get a nice refreshing vape without it freezing the back of your throat.

The throat hit from the nicotine is a little soft, but this is solely down to them being a 2% nicotine salt mix and is typical for this type of device.

There were some excellent flavors in the range that we tested, and it seems Geek Bar has other interesting, unique ones in the same line that I’d be interested in trying.

The battery lasts as long as any other disposable of this size with a 500mAh cell. It doesn’t have the fastest charge time, but they are so affordable you can easily have two batteries that you could use with several pods.

The pods got close enough to the advertised 600 puffs, but it did seem like some of them fell a little short. Again this could just be the sample review pods we were sent, or it could be a broader QC issue with the pods. Either way, they were not drastically short, and I was content with the overall performance.

Verdict

The Geek Bar J1 is a very good disposable pod (or replaceable pod) device.

It blends the worlds of disposables and pod vapes in an easy-to-use style and still delivers the performance you’d expect from a disposable. While being far more environmentally friendly than standard disposable vape pens.

The mesh coils deliver very good flavor, and there are some excellent combinations in the entire range.

The J1 is a welcome step up from all-in-one disposables. It’s just as affordable, and you only need to buy replacement pods and can easily have a couple of batteries for backup.
